Isfahan, Iran. Islamic, Persian. c. 700 C.E.; additions and restorations in the 14th, 18th, and 20th centuries C.E. Stone, brick, wood, plaster, and glazed ceramic tile.
Curator Note
"A 1,000-year architectural experiment. Unlike the Dome of the Rock (a snapshot in time), this mosque grew and changed with every Persian dynasty. It invented the "Four Iwan" plan which became the standard for mosques across Asia."
Form
- Four-Iwan Plan: A central courtyard framed by four large vaulted halls (iwans).
- Centripetal design: The city layout converges on this mosque; it is integrated into the bazaar (souq).
- Brickwork: Masterful unglazed geometric brick patterns (Seljuk) vs. glazed tile (Safavid).
- Muqarnas: Honeycomb vaulting used in the niches (dematerializes the stone).
- Domes: Two major domes (South/North) show mathematical precision.
Function
- Congregational Mosque (Jameh): The main Friday mosque for the city.
- Civic Center: A pedestrian hub connecting different parts of the city (you walk through it).
- Royal Chapel: The Maqsura (South Dome) was reserved for the ruler.
- Innovation Lab: Architects tested new vaulting techniques here for centuries.
- Religious education: Served as a madrasa and prayer hall.
Content
- Qibla Iwan: The largest, most decorated iwan facing Mecca (flanked by minarets).
- Courtyard (Sahn): An open-air oasis of peace in the bustling city.
- Mihrab of Oljeitu: A stucco masterpiece of calligraphy and floral design (1310).
- North Dome (Taj al-Mulk): Mathematically perfect ("Golden Ratio") brick dome.
- Hypostyle halls: Forests of columns surrounding the courtyard.
Context
- Isfahan was the capital of the Seljuk and Safavid empires.
- Evolution: Started as a hypostyle mosque (Arab style), evolved into the Persian Iwan style.
- The Four-Iwan plan was originally used for palaces, then adapted for religion.
- Patronage: Every ruler (Malik Shah I, etc.) added a section to leave their mark.
- Urban integration: The literal heart of the old city interactions.
